[Campaign] [Judas' Game] [AD&D Rules] [The Dungeon] [Kline Syndrome] [Transcript] [Roleplay Ramble] [The Banana Zone]

They patiently wait with pieces of eight so everybody can smile... one more time

I've been roleplaying for about 8 years now and in that time I've had quite a few characters, most of whom at some point have been very special to me -- I tend to form an attachment to them, they become part of me and I become part of them. Enjr was one of my first characters and I was especially fond of her, but I have been fond of them all and some of them still live. Below is a list of all my characters and a little about them, just for interest, really. I hope that other roleplayers have characters equally important to them.

Caroline Kelly

Campaign: Blade's Syndicate Wars
Class: School Teacher-cum-Operative
Level: 1 (equivalent)
Status: inactive
Description: A female human of average height and looks, aged 29, her blonde hair still clings to a perm at the ends while the rest of her clings to youth with remarkable ability. She teaches maths to OLR Corp employee's 14yr old children and has a young son of her own, Jason. She lives with Jason and her sister and works as an operative for the Corp to supplment her wages.
Personality: Sensible, motherly and teacherly, she takes everything she might need wherever she goes. She prefers not to use violence, although she has no qualms about implementing it when necessary. She likes to get the job done quickly and expediently, but she will not scrimp on quality to achieve these goals. She's probably not a great mother, but she tries.
History: She was born and brought up in the city, trained to be a teacher and finally achieved her dream. Jason was the product of a short-lived affair during her first years at the school. Since having Jason she has worked for the Corp so that he would not go without. Since working for the Corp, she has done several missions for them, but they are all classified.

Sir Derran

Campaign: Giles' Elenium Campaign
Class: Cyrinic Knight
Level: 3
Status: discontinued
Description: Tall, burly, pretty ugly to the point of being an ideal troll mate, Derran was sturdy looking knight material. He was very dark and hairy and had a face to make any mother cry.
Personality: Surprisingly optimistic, he kept cheerful by playing his guitar loudly and badly.
History: A string of unsuccessful attempts to talk to girls finally convinced Derran that he was never going to get anywhere. So he joined the knighthood.
Other:His uncle was a Lamork. He had a horse called Hercules and a chihuahua called Gremlin. If he had lived now he would have been a fan of Metallica.

Lady Ellora

Campaign: Spectre's AD&D
Class: Paladin of Raleigha
Level: 3
Status: long time discontinued
Description: a gorgeous 5'11" tall woman with long coppery hair, plate mail and a sword, big, f**k off.
Personality: Although a little too happy to leap into combat, Ellora was true to her faith and her lawful-good alignment. She was very willing to risk her neck for her fellows and more than once this got her into more trouble than her friend had been in before she decided to help them.
History: Born into a minor noble family, Ellora was trained in weapons as a youth and proved to have a natural talent that deserved not to be wasted. And so she joined the priesthood and gained the rank of paladin (the details are a little hazy -- it was a long time ago).
Other: Might well be dead -- the other characters think so.

Enjr

Campaign: Keith's Mystara Campaign
Class: Druid/avangion
Level: 15/3
Status: dead
Description: Enjr was a slight girl of 5'9" when she started out; she had shoulder-length brown hair and usually wore a white druidic robe over leather armour. Out of habit she fought with a scimitar though she was never any good with it. At the end, Enjr was a beautiful being with pale gold hair, wings and a permanent glow.
Personality: Quiet and shy, she tended to loiter during fighting in order to tend the wounded. She had a big heart and cared about everyone, especially nature. She was naturally very wise and yet very innocent in a great many ways.
History: Too much!
Click here to see Enjr's rather gigantic history.

Faloin

Campaign: Dragon Warriors
Class: Dwarven Knight
Level: 6
Status: dormant (very)
Description: A dwarf about 4' tall, dressed in platemail carrying far too many weapons and not enough beer.
Personality: He worships Manthax and aspires to be like him, which means that he leads a typically dwarven life: he drinks and then when there is something to kill, he kills it.
History: Fought in the Civil War (he was a Cannonball Shock Trooper) but got kidnapped like the rest of the dwarves when the prophecy began to fulfill itself. He was rescued by Manthax and has been a kind of attache to him ever since. This means that he gets to carry all of Manthax's weapons (he has a lot) and mix with a bunch of human knights. Recently he was involved in the battle for Capitol and was on the winning side.
Other: Recently the Dragon warriors campaign moved on 5 years and all the characters, being of reasonably high level (up to 9 or 10) were only involved in politics and stuff so we are restarting with new, 1st level characters.

Grail

Campaign: Flakes' Cyberpunk
Class: Nomad
Level: n/a
Status: inactive
Description: Young, tall and quite attractive, Grail prefers to go bald. He has a broad but not deep build and tends to wear cammo and ride his motorbike around.
Personality: A very intelligent man, Grail tends to be quiet and thoughtful until he has a plan when he starts talking. He's less cautious than the solos he usually ends up working with, which sometimes worries then quite a bit (like the time he went and asked for room service while carrying an assault rifle). He is very sober and likes to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
History: Born into an executive family, his parents were both killed by OLR Corp. He was one of 9 children but hardly knows his siblings, all except his twin brother whom he grew up with. He went to the city to find the man who killed his parents and while there he had a couple or relationships, one of which is still ongoing. His real name is Arthur Evans and he got his handle, Grail, when he started going to the Count, a fixer, to get enough money to support himself and his survival in the city. He has now managed to kill the man who murdered his parents, but he will never be satisfied until OLR Corp have been taken out. Preferably with a rail gun.

Lanyra

Campaign: Dragon Warriors TM
Class: Warlock
Level: 2
Status: dead
Description: A tall, female elf, clad in lots of armour and wielding a rather large sword. She had dark hair and eyes but was not very pretty.
Personality: The tradition for Elven maidens was to be very homely, quiet and shy: Lanyra was none of these things. She was tough because she had to be; her aspirations caused her to be an outcast from her race. She was not a particularly good-aligned character.
History: She was an outcast and wandered far looking for a place to be. This led her to the party where she was not really welcomed at first, but grew to prove her loyalty (entirely due to Ciran being a fellow outcast elf, and a powerful one at that). A mage called Saruman, however, tricked her into drinking a love potion in order to use her as a bodyguard (for she would defend her dearest love to the death) but unfortunately she was killed in Chudok (the evil Warlock)'s gladiatorial arena, right at the end of the campaign.
Other: Saruman died too. Hurrah, hurrah, death to the evil, deceiving wizard!

Sir Marcus of Royhanne

Campaign: The Saga
Class: Knight
Level: 3
Status: inactive
Description: 6" tall (that is, 6 inches), Marcus would normally be a little over six foot naturally. He had coarse dark hair and an open, youthful face.
Personality: Really quite innocent despite his knightliness, Marcus likes to get involved even when he can't do much at all. He aims to destroy all evil-doers but tends to forget his height when challenging aforementioned evil-doers (he challenged a dragon once). He believes strongly in rescuing maidens from dragons and witches and seeks such quests whenever he gets the chance. He suffers from a certain heroic idiocy but fortunately, due to his height, it usually results in laughter rather than death.
History: Brought up in Royhanne, in his father's Keep, Marcus wanted to be a knight from an early age. The proudest day of his life was when he finally won his spurs. He attended many quests to save maidens in towers etc, but alas, a terrible thing befell him on one of these quests. A witch invited him in for tea, drugged him, shrank him and... well, he awoke nearly twenty years later, springing from a small chest, still 6" tall. Having few options, he lucked in with Blake and Riggs as they seemed like nice chaps and they did save his life, after all.
Other: Marcus was meant to be a combat for Blake and Riggs in a session I was running for them but they insisted on chatting to him and I grew to like the character. The only problem is his height because Blade (Blake) and Dark Jedi 1aB (Riggs) both insisted on making him grow whenever they DMed and I'd rather like the challenge of finding something to do with a tiny weeny knight.

Mellora Deathwing

Campaign: Solo dungeons
Class: knight
Level: 4
Status: very discontinued
Description: Mellora was a huge female elf whose sheer strength was incredible for such a race. She was very pretty and very scary looking at the same time.
Personality: Scary. She had a tendency to growl at people she didn't wish to talk to. She was an adventurer through and through, doing it only for the money and the joy of the fight.
History: Very vague. She was incredibly strong and capable and so decided that adventuring was the thing for her.
Other: My very first character, Mellora was just a pretty brick lavatory.

Reaver

Campaign: Flakes' MERPS TM
Class: Dunedan Ranger
Level: 1
Status: discontinued
Description: 6'6" and as strong as a man can be, Reaver is dark of hair and grey of eye. He tends to wear black quite a bit (unlike most Dunedain) and carry as many weapons as he can hold.
Personality: Calm and level-headed. He appears to be quite a grim sort but in actual fact he likes a good laugh and a drink. He's good in a fight but doesn't leap in like a loon (and some of my other characters).
History: He did Dunedany rangery stuff for a while, got married, had a daughter, his wife died and his daughter was fostered by some local farmers. He kept an eye on her and once she was grown decided to wander off and see what Rohan and Gondor were like.
Other: Hid real name is Tarranon Redhruin.

M. Schroedinger

Campaign: Blade's Belham AD&D Thing
Class: Bard
Level: 3
Status: sporadically active
Description: A good-looking young male half-elf with sandy hair and blue eyes. He can usually be found with his hands on either a musical instrument or a person of the female variety - he loves both equally.
Personality: Roguish but honourable, Schroedinger (or Schro, as he tends to be called) likes to entertain and bring cheer. He is optimistic and bright, rarely phased and willing to do or try almost anything once. He is a believer in chivalry and heroism and loves to sing and tell stories about these topics the most.
History: Schro's real father is a notable elf and his mother is the wife of a human lord... enough said. His human step-father was fair to him all his life, but Schro was never favoured as he was the living proof of his mother's infidelity. When he reached maturity he was married off but hated married life (he couldn't stay faithful) so he packed his bags and left. His first name is Merriman but he never really tells anyone what it is as he considers it embarrassing (although it is a good name for a bard): Schroedinger is his step-father's family name. While seeking his fortune, he happened upon the city of Belham and fell in with a nefarious scheme which has since resulted in he and his companians - a dwarf named Flint, a pretty priestess called Joanna and a ranger called Calahan - being permanently separated from their bodies and destined to wander the Universe in a Quantum LeapTM -esque manner, trying to stop the hideously evil being called Darius from reforming and destroying everything. I think.

Theah

Campaign: Judas' Campaign
Class: Thief
Level: 7
Status: retired (sadly)
Description: Theah is a 5'2", slim, attractive human female of 19 years. She has slightly wavy, shoulder-length golden-brown hair, green eyes and likes to wear practical but figure-hugging clothes. Well, normally, anyhow. At the moment, however, her hair is brown with a white streak in it (thanks to Ravenloft) and she can't eat or drink. So no weight problems then... She also has a penchant for gothic styles of dress after her experiences on the old Demiplane of Dread.
She likes her daggers but out of prudence and self-defence tends to fight with two short-swords instead. On the back of her right hand is imprinted a symbol (like Aries), obtained when she touched a plaque imprinted with this symbol and six others.
Personality:Most of the time she is very sardonic and scathing, sometimes to the point of moodiness; her opinion of the party is the main cause of this as, in her mind, they are a group of bumbling unsubtle fools. She might like them (or at least not dislike them) but whenever they fail to understand the basic principles of silence and inconspicuousness, they tend to get the sharp side of her tongue. As this happens quite frequently, or at least used to, she comes across as a very irritable young woman. She has a reasonably healthy sense of humour, especially when it comes to herself; she loves surprising people and is really quite a pleasant person when put in the right circumstances (quite rare, although she is mellowing slowly). A bit of a flirt, she likes her men but is careful not to behave like a slut. Her natural talent for healing has become apparent since leaving Zhentil Keep and she is trying to improve it since healing potions disappear faster than a snowball in a supernova.
History: Born and bred in Zhentil Keep, Theah was there for the Cyric uprisings, which shaped her opinion of religion quite strongly. She grew up with naturally quick fingers which she never hesitated to use when she was needy. But one day a Cyric priest arrested her and she found herself naked in the stocks with a bunch of people she would end up adventuring with. They escaped, were recaptured and sent on a mission by an evil priest called Nos'Lothar. They messed up his plans as best they could and fled to the Demiplane of Dread with a prophetic book they hoped to keep safe and every intention of stopping their friend Gereth from becoming a vampire as he was already half-way there. They had a terrible time of it, most of the party died and was replaced and then Gereth died so they went home. Fortunately they managed to keep hold of the book. Now Theah's plans involve dancing in the ruins of Zhentil Keep... but she has to make them first.

Winter Ashorack

Campaign: Dragon Warriors
Class: Sorceror (Christian)
Level: 1
Status: retired
Description: 5'10", dark hair, blue eyes, quite attractive wearing normal-looking clothes and carrying a short-sword.
Personality: Quiet, thoughtful and clever; devoted to God and the crusading mission.
History: Born in the Northern Kingdoms, kidnapped by the mist and forced to work in goblin mines, Winter was freed with the rest and turned his devotions to God, as God was the only one who could have prevented his capture. Recently he has hit a poor patch and in a effort to earn some money and spread the word of God, he joined the Golden Horizon as a slave hand, for it was heading out to discover the New World.

Elwyn: "Little Hobbit of Fun"

Campaign: FunkTime AD&D
Class: Fighter-Cleric
Level: 2-2
Status: sporadic
Description: A 3'2" halfling priestess of Lliira, whose passion for fun and wrestling earned her the title Little Hobbit of Fun. Likes to wear bright colours, as dictated by her faith, and swing a morning star when wrestling people to the ground is not an option.
Personality: Cheery and bright, with a strong sense of fun and right, Elwyn used to torment her Elf mage companion, Ti, by regularly trying to get her into bed with handsome young men.
History: Born in the halfling lands, she was fairly typical of her people, but with a determination to follow her faith. This led her to a life of adventuring and to meet her travelling partner, Ti, whose own quest was to catalogue all the monsters they met. Their escapades led them to destroying a shadow dragon and its undead minions, then onto mass cult extermination before landing themselves on the plane of Baator. She and her friends then went to Sigil via the Yellow Brick Road and got mightily confused by all the 'doors', and people who were mad, mad I tell you! Once they escaped from there, they returned to somewhere that looked like their home plane, befriended a headless dead paladin and found out what happened to his head. Last I saw of Elwyn, she was walking into the sunset with Ti and Luke.

Saint Calida Dunraven

Campaign: Hitchman's Against the Shadow D&D
Class: Paladin of Lathander
Level: 9 (ECL 12)
Status: retired
Description: 5'8", 17 years old, with jaw-length brown hair, brown eyes and an attractive but physically tip-top body. She has a lot of presence. She wears half-plate armour with a green and yellow tabard over it, either wielding a quarterstaff or flaming mace. Since she is half-celestial, she also sports a beautiful pair of feathery wings, which fold within her back and so are not always visible. She rides a dire lion called Alnor.
Personality: Not too smart, but a quick learner, Cal is brave and steadfast, honest and always positive. She finds no room in her heart for fear or despair and has absolute trust and faith in Lathander. She has high personal standards, but is willing to allow others their personal weaknesses. She is something of a one-woman army, but admits that she isn't very broad in her abilities. She's still very young, and quite niaive, although not a child, and aware of the way the world works. She doesn't understand politics and finds books ponderous and slow as a method of information-gathering. She prefers talking to people.
History: She was born on the Dunraven farm near Shadowdale and joined the church of Lathander when she was 12. Her devotion is absolute. When she was 17 she was sent to Mottisfont, near Esembra, to join the Protectorate there. As a result she was killed by giant ants and raised to life by a greater celestial called Arefest - from this she gained her half-celestial side. Her adventures took her far and wide, across parallel planes and into the Mines of Thethyamar to stop the armies of Fiends that were plaguing the Prime Material planes. Then she went on a quest to stop the Shades and what she considered to be their 'inevitable' nefarious schemes... but had to stop due to forces outside her control. Shame really!

R3-G9

Campaign: Starchaser's Star Wars D20
Class: Astromech (Expert-Scout)
Level: 7 (ECL 4)
Status: destroyed
Description: 4' tall, round and white, with racing green bits and a transparent green-tinted dome that showed all the inner workings of this little droid. He had an assortment of tools and weapons and a shield generator.
Personality: R3, as he was generally known, was a very independent little droid who belonged to no man. He did tend to follow people around, however! He was headstrong and curious, often forgetting his place, although he was smart enough to use his innocuous droidiness when he remembered about it. He chattered to himself a lot, and liked to know as much about everything as he could, realising that it's his advantage over biological entities. He was a wimp in a fight, only getting involved if he had the clear advantage, or if he thought no one would notice.
History: Having lived on the moon of Uffel for years, hiding out, he finally escaped that imprisonment by making a deal with Datt, a Twi'lek who was working with some Jedi padawans for the Jedi Council. He got Datt to remove a bomb inside him in return for his services and some information. Having nowhere to go, he just tagged along with the gang, which irritated the Ommwatte (sp?) Felix, because R3 was better at Astrogating than him. He was destroyed when the team was attacked by people working for Count Dooku (not that we knew that) and he was trying to defend himself and escape.

Arianwen Axehammer

Campaign: Blade's AD&D
Class: Wizard-Thief
Level: 3-3?
Status: ceased
Description: Quite small and slight for a female dwarf, with long, dark plaited hair and usually wearing trousers and a shirt. she was never far from her battleaxe.
Personality: Fiesty and dwarf-man-hating, Arianwen was a staunch feminist, determined to take her life out of the hands of males, who had ruled it for so long, and make a name for herself as a great hero. She found it hard to use her magic openly, however, keeping it hidden through habit. Her father had been a master runesmith, and she had trained as a locksmith before leaving her home.
History: The other characters in the group never knew how Arianwen had been banished from her home for using magic, nor how she feared for her father, whose would be blamed for it if anyone found out. She joined the party to make her name, and befriended Cherlynne first of all - the elven ranger who was simply lovely. Sadly, Cherlynne died following a strange occurrence with other dimensions... of the other party members, she was less than fond of the boy thief, Slink, but respected Big Gay Jerrod, their Cleric of Listra (Goddess of Quests), and liked Rodez, who was autistic. the later additions to the group appealed to her more because they were female - Emily and Vinka. The group were working for someone called The Trickster, who had asked them to travel across the continent, but they never found out why as the game had to end prematurely.

Analita Edarn

Campaign: Si's D&D Kingdoms of Kalamar
Class: Sorcerer
Level: 6
Status: alive
Description: 5'2" and gorgeous, with long black wavy hair and Mediterranean looks.
Personality: Ana is just a nice person, looking to do nice things for other people. She likes to help others, and will gladly risk her neck in the process. However, if pushed too far she can get stubborn and even annoying...
History: Having left home at 15 to avoid being married off by her mother's new husband (following her father's death), she travelled across the land, from Brandaria to Jenavue, helping people and getting work where she could. She joined the party when she couldn't find anywhere else to sit in the inn, and they were all together when the wererats attacked the festival... they found them, but were roped into looking for someone making Flaymaster statues. Since then they have met no end of irritating and unpleasant people, bringing out Ana's bad side.

Assorted Warhammer 40K Characters

Campaign: Warhammer 40K
Class: Various
Level: Various
Status: depends
Atheloras de Rouann, aka "Rowan": Rowan was an Eldar Exodite dragon rider who farmed pigs in the ship's cargo hold to provide funds for his dragon's upkeep. His dragon rocked - a fast little gecko!
Cyrrumaal Tyliana, aka "Kira": Kira is a Striking Scorpion from the Ulthwe craftworld who has just begun to walk the path of the Warlock. She is strong and lithe, very aloof and proud, with a personal vendetta against the forces of Chaos, which she has fought many many times. She is in Squad Stealer with Locus, a Crimson Fist marine, and Rogan, a White Scar - the name stuck after they teleported a genestealer onto their ship in their very first mission. Their most notable adventure took her back in time to the Heresy, where she met the Emperor and because she and her marine companions (friends, really, although none of them would ever have used the word) helped save his life. As a result, she got to carry a sword that had part of the key to a temple holding the essence of the Dark Emperor captive. As a result of the mission, she developed something of a soft spot for the Emperor of Humanity, even though she would never admit that, either. The squad's most recent activities took them back in time to the final battle of the Necrons against the Old Ones, to steal some samples of phase armour from The Robots, who have taken Kira's sword and intend to reconstruct the key to the temple that holds the Dark Emperor. Squad Stealer have teamed up with Squad Fate, the Chaos Dragon Gaalruush and Ahriman to defeat these robots once and for all...
Prentice Aquillon: Prentice was an apprentice librarian in the Doom Eagles Chapter. He was quite good, until some Dire Avengers sliced his chest apart with shurikens. He had no luck with limbs, having lost both his legs to a Necron gauss flayer. He rocked at sneaking about, though. This summary isn't doing him any justice!
Alric: He was a Space Wolf, very powerful indeed. Broke another wolf in half to become pack leader... he liked fighting a lot, especially with claws. He hated genestealers a lot, especially after an ambassador nearly ruined his career because his son was a genestealer...
Gaius Decius: Trainee Blood Angels chaplain. Bloody rubbish. Was never allowed anything, never felt a part of the chapter. Died and I didn't mind!
Charity Valerian: A Battle Sister in Squad Intrigue, Charity was made squad leader as soon as she joined the already-formed team. She is a current character, and the squad's mission is to save the universe from the C'Tan and Chaos... the current plan is to steal a Blackstone Fortress and then use it to blow the Dark Emperor and as many C'Tan as possible to smithereens!

Single Session Characters

We often run one-off sessions outside of our regular campaigns, or sometimes just short campaigns. I've participated in quite a few of these and so here is a brief listing of such short-lived characters.

Grishnak
A goblin from a raiding party that destroyed the adventurers' main town, Klein, in Keith's Campaign. I got to use a sawn-off Lochaber and kill schoolkids -- it was lots of fun! I did get killed by a school teacher, though.
Bug-R-OFF
A Paranoia character, Bug-R-OFF was a technician who sadly did not manage to keep any of his six clones through one session.
Flash-O-GIT
Another Paranoia character, Flash-O-GIT started as a RED level bod but got a promotion for killing three of the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Citizens who were plaguing the Computer.
Richard D'Arcy
A rather suave Man-in-Black, Richard was played over three or so cool sessions in which we took out large parts of London in a set a cross between From Dusk Till Dawn and Men in Black.
Armenia
Armenia was a vampire character created for a 10-hour roleplay improvisation. She started off by dying and ended up with her soul stuffed into a toy wolf -- so don't let it happen to you, kids.
Ashurek
We were a Drow raiding party and I got to be their leader. We failed completely but it was a great laugh and an action-packed adventure and I recommend being the bad guys for a day to anyone. You can be sooooo evil.
Morian
A second Drow raiding party was sent to do the job the other one failed to do: this time we were 10th level, though, and Morian was a High Priestess of Lolth (and hence the group leader). We probably all died (we didn't finish the session) but with 3 weapons masters in the party and a beholder we were pretty damned hard.
Conrad the Valiant
Blade was running a dungeon and told us all to roll up 4th level characters. I made myself a cleric of Listra, goddess of quests and he was doing okay. Well, actually he got to the second fight and got butchered and that was the end of him so I played Brian the Thief for the rest of the session. But it was fun. My first attempt at a half-elf - killed! I have no luck with elves.
Stryler the Druid
I played Stryler for one adventure of Eberron (D&D), in which he was a druid who had a beast totem which was the displacer beast. Quite hard to envisage, I must say! His animal companion was a dog called Canis, who sat out the very hard adventure which had a few too many 200' drops for my liking. He survived his one adventure, and even levelled up, although how that happened is a miracle!

[Campaign] [Judas' Game] [AD&D Rules] [The Dungeon] [Kline Syndrome] [Transcript] [Roleplay Ramble] [The Banana Zone]

Disclaimer: all events here relayed are completely fictional and any semblance of truth is entirely in my mind. I realise after having read the part about murdering small children being fun that you're going to start wondering whether or not to call the police, but I shall stress that this whole thing is a figment of my imagination. Just like you.
